Assignment 2: Self Portrait

I have now started work on Assignment 2: Self Portrait. I have thought a lot about how I want to portray myself and I have spent some time making some sketches; taking photographs of myself and my possessions as well as scanning stuff in. I also understand from the course notes that some criticism of others' work is necessary and I have e-mailed my tutor today for some input. I hope that I will be able to complete this module by the end of February. Now I just need to put it all together to make a final image!

I have reorganised the slide show to show a sequence of thought processes. I am now thinking along the lines of footprints, hand prints etc, not in the literal sense but in the abstract sense of my impression on life and life's impressions on me.

I have also started to look at self portraits made by other people and have been making some notes in my paper log. This assignment, I notice, requires not only self criticism but also assessment of other's work including a statement on how other students completed the tasks. I have e-mailed my tutor, as instructed, but, as yet, have not heard from him. It is only a week, but I hope he sends me an answer soon as it is holding me back.

  1. Hi Claudine, thanks for the comments about 'Four Seasons' - really appreciated! I just wanted to see how many extra bells and whistles Photoshop CS4 had got! I love your self portrait on the OCA website, you should try and use it in the second assignment. I'm sure I've seen other students work for the earlier assignments which have been manipulated or enhanced in some way. If in doubt, check with the tutor. Keep up the good work!

  3. The self-p pencil drawing looks pretty good -- is it possible to see it bigger? And are those variations on it, with colour or collage, hard to tell at this size but I like the approach very much.

  4. Hi Mary, The pencil drawing is not really very good, my hand is not yet in; I have had quite a long break from drawing and sketching, I used love life classes. I don't know if it will work for you but if you click on the image it should enlarge on your screen. I was playing around with Photoshop Elements; I liked the results and it is precisely what I would have wanted to achieve with real paint and collage. I decided to take this course to learn Photoshop and it is proving to be interesting.

  5. Yes that worked fine Claudine, thanks. I really do like the pencil drawings, and the scan + pencil drawing + colour wash in photoshop works very well in my view. The combination of drawing and digital manipulation seems very intriguing, giving a nice balance (or contrast) of hand and technology.
